As an American man, there are few things that I love more than some beef protein. Several of those things happen to be combinations of different cow proteins — cheesesteaks, cheeseburgers and fictional government employee Ron Swanson’s famous “turf n’ turf” delight. It’s a 16-ounce T-bone and a 24-ounce porterhouse — or roughly 275 grams of cow protein! Now that’s a delicious meal.
Dairy proteins such as whey and casein are derived from cows, but they’re not really what I’m talking about here. Yes, they are pretty well-known throughout the sports supplements realm. However, in the words of Arnold Schwarzenegger, “Milk is for babies!”
On the other hand, we know the protein derived from the meat of cows to be a great muscle builder, yet it is not often thought of as a sports supplement. Don’t take this the wrong. Whey and casein are still great protein options that can help you achieve your fitness goals, but there are some minor details that might make you more interested in a highly anabolic alternative.
First, there are generally three types of whey available — concentrate, isolate and hydrolysate. Briefly, concentrates are typically 80% protein and 20% fat, plus carbohydrate (including cholesterol and sugar). It’s not a perfect method. Isolates are more potent, usually 90% protein, and hydrolysates are simply pre-digested forms of concentrates or isolates.
On the other hand beef protein isolate (BPI) is an astonishing 99% protein, so you’re going to get more bang for your buck with BPI supplements than any type of whey. Extra protein is great and — bonus! — the fat and carbohydrate content is eliminated. This makes beef protein isolate much more manageable than the turf n’ turf!
Relative to whey and casein, beef is hypoallergenic. Personally, I know that when I have a scoop of whey, I can expect to have at least a little “gastric distress” in an hour or two. It’s also possible for dairy to cause nasal stuffiness and gut irritation. This may not apply to everyone, but high consumption of dairy proteins can slowly make individuals more sensitive and allergic. While these side effects might seem minor, they are easily avoided. But you won’t find any of this discomfort from beef protein isolate because it’s lactose free in addition to being gluten-free and sugar-free. Beef protein isolate eliminates the gastrointestinal side effects without compromising your gains.
Studies published in both the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition andAmerican Journal of Clinical Nutrition support beef as a potent stimulator of anabolic signaling and muscle protein synthesis. Research on the cellular responses are essential from a scientific perspective but, of course, we ultimately just want to answer one question: Will it get me jacked?
As you may have suspected, when beef protein isolate is put to the test, it builds muscle. In one important clinical study, college-aged men and women were equally divided to consume either beef protein isolate or a maltodextrin placebo daily while training five days per week over an eight-week period. When the results came in, those receiving the beef protein built considerably more muscle compared to those consuming the placebo. In fact, beef protein isolate users gained an average of 7.7 pounds, while the placebo group gained an insignificant 0.7 pounds.
But here’s the kicker. A third group in this study consumed whey protein isolate in an identical manner to the other two groups. Researchers found that the magnitude of change for increased muscle mass and decreased fat mass, although not statistically significant, was greater for beef than for whey. Thus, we can confidently conclude that the muscle gains supported by beef protein isolate were unsurpassed by whey protein.
